This story raises awareness on how smart home appliances can be misused for domestic violence.
As our homes become ‘smarter’ possible dangers, such as surveillance features, should be a part of the product user research.
Social inequality and domestic violence is an important aspect of sustainability.
Gender equality is presented as one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Here domestic violence takes a big part, as “1 of 4 women from age 15+ has experienced intimate partner
violence at least once in their lifetime”. Growing percentage of domestic abuse through smart home appliances,
performed both by men and women, has been registered in help call lines as well.
Designers Julija and Eglė invite Arçelik to consider the broader definition of sustainability and question
their power position in aforementioned issues.
